I first noticed the self-serving kiosk in my local super market. Shortly after I noticed my bank no longer had ‘Tellers’, more self-serving kiosks and two staff members with iPads!
I commute regularly by train and experienced longer waits in line for tickets as ‘remodelling work’ took place earlier this month. Last evening all was revealed. Yes, self-serving kiosks! See the before and after picture.
Retailers and service providers are experimenting with new payment kiosk systems as a way to cut payroll costs, hopefully without angering customers. But they risk alienating their customers if their self-pay kiosks fail to work properly or people resent serving as part-time cashiers.
However, the growth in electronic payment systems serves as a warning to businesses that the population is being groomed to make all monetary transactions electronically!
The new generation of consumers, who are growing up with cards, are likely to turn to cards habitually to pay. The introduction of contactless payments has increased the willingness of consumers to make more low value payments by card or mobile phone/device.
As a business owner, you will need to ‘get on board’ and take electronic payments. By not accepting cards, a business may be at a competitive disadvantage.
Equally, if you are accepting card payments, check that you are paying a competitive rate for transactional fees and charges.
