Katie and Guests of Leon Hermans Mix and Mingle
Katie Cruikshank left Nigeria in 1979 to live and raise her family in the UK. Immediately on arrival she made the conscious decision to ‘Integrate fully’ into her new home and society.
When I hear the word Integration I automatically think of it in terms of ‘Social integration’. Described by Wikipedia as – the movement of refugees and underprivileged sections of a society into the mainstream of societies….
Listening to Katie’s experiences you quickly realise that ‘Full Integration encompasses many adjectives such as Economic, Regional, Racial, Educational and more.
Katie’s origins lie with an African tribe renowned for its hardy robustness and warrior traits. She has the right DNA to adapt and overcome.
Katie asked herself ‘What can I do?’
Within 8 months she had joined a Mums and Toddler group and sold Avon. Soon after she started work for B&Q. She was fast tracked from floor assistant to consultant. She also became an active trade union representative within the company. Katie later became a counsellor in the borough of Tameside. When Manchester hosted the Commonwealth games Katie was assigned to the Nigerian National Team. She first had to undergo 16 moths training. She now runs a growing domestic and commercial property cleaning business. Throughout her journey Katie has had to deal with Economic, Regional, Racial and Educational issues in her quest to be inclusive.
As I reflected on Katie’s story, I recognise many parallels and similarities with my Integration journey. I had the realisation that we had faced and overcome similar challenges, many in different ways. It’s as if we adopt a sort of resolve that says ‘I am here to stay so get used to it’.
I first met Katie at the Hilton Hotel Manchester. It was at the end of the Greater Manchester Biz Expo. As we passed each other in the hotel foyer, we simply exchanged smiles and said hello. We exchanged pleasantries about the show and later swopped business cards.
Our next contact was through twitter and we joined in each other’s conversation/engagements. Our next impromptu meeting was at an event organised by Leon Herman Chartered Accountants. Katie greeted me warmly and we spent a significant part of the evening chatting and introducing each other to our personal contacts.
Katie is a very proactive networker (no surprises there). She sent me a personal invitation to the 4Networking group she was attending in my area. After the 4N meeting Katie gave an introduction to members of her network who want a reliable and trustworthy Merchant service.
Thank you Katie for integrating me into your network and sharing your personal experiences.
