Working with Props
I had a very interesting experience this morning as a guest at a network event. Each member was asked to bring a ‘Prop’ and use it in their elevator pitch. ‘Networking Guru’s’ talk about being memorable and using props.
The props I use are payment machine, Debit/Credit cards or an iPad depending on the theme of my pitch. I also wear hats/caps and bright shirts to help make me more memorable.
More than 80% of the group made lame excuses as to why they did not bring a prop (and none where wearing bright shirts or hats!).
Guess whose pitches I can remember? The members who made the effort to bring a prop. Not wishing to state the obvious but it’s not a stretch of the imagination to guess the professions of the following from the ‘Prop’ – (Paint brush, Medicine ball, Insurance certificate, hard drive and Picture frame).
So simple but yet so powerful
As a side, the member who brought the medicine ball complemented me on the use of my prop and quality of the delivery of my pitch. If my example helps him raise and improve his approach and delivery of his elevator pitch then I will be very happy.
In my experience it’s the Networker that doesn’t work – Not Networking!
- Take a prop to your next meetings and gauge the feedback.
- Think about how you could make yourself more memorable (wear a pin, broach, colourful item, develop a memorable hook etc.)
