Andy Poar Host of the ‘Let’s Do Lunch’ Business Event
Andy is a volunteer worker with the Charity group ‘Samaritans’. The Samaritans are a group of people who will allow you to sensitively discuss your options and explore your own feelings, helping you to find an inner strength that lets you find your own way forward rather than offering practical advice. Most contact takes place over the phone, but people can now email text and write or call in for a face to face talk. What really made me sit up and listen was Andy’s short introduction in which he stated how the skills and techniques his trainers at the Samaritans had taught him, were being used in both his business and personal life.
During a recent one two one I was fortunate, I believe, to recognise that this person was transferring numerous skills and experience gained in professional and personal life and applying them to a new business. Not only did this benefit the business operator but also had a great benefit for the client. Andy proceeded to outline the Four Cornerstones of the Samaritans support service:
- Self Determination
- Non Judgemental.
When I think about those four points it is immediately obvious that most of us most of the time practice the exact opposite. We don’t listen fully and we interrupt the speaker. We’ll share the conversation with others – OMG so and so just… Then we tell how we’ve experienced the same tale of woe, except ours was much worse of course and then tell them what to do! When someone reaches out to the Samaritan’s, the volunteer answers with something like ‘Samaritans, can I help you?’ and then shuts up.
Andy has experienced a call in which there was silence for nearly eight minutes. During that time he only said ‘I’m here to listen, take your time, please just tap the phone to acknowledge that you are safe and understand me.
Eight minutes, I’ve met consultants, advisor and networkers who don’t give you eight seconds before offering solutions, fixes or a pitch. The thing is we all know what we need and want. The ‘great listener’ will help up uncover the answer for yourself.
Imagine how much more improved our business and personal lives would be if we behaved like Samaritans? The message is clear and unambiguous – Just Listen.
