Danny Maddox Evolve Document Solutions
As I entered the building I met Danny Maddox of Evolve Document solutions. Danny and I are friends from ‘Back in the day’. We re-connected through the Shout network group where Danny is an active member.
I was early for my meeting with Jim so I followed Danny to his office. He offered me a seat and a brew. As I looked around his office I noticed his White Board – Trust and Honesty, written across the top in large letters.
I repeated the word out loud – ‘That’s what it’s all about Sammy, Trust and Honesty’. Amen to that Danny.
Danny’s Photocopier business Evolve is just eighteen months old. What Danny shared with me next just blew me away.
Danny had served his previous employer for more than 15 years giving loyal service. When the owner decided that he wanted to ‘retire’, Danny put together a management buyout plan guaranteeing that the business would continue and all jobs assured. The owner then changed his mind and demanded an immediate cash payment or the deal was off.
Danny did not want to agree the new terms so the owner sold the business to a Manchester based company who promised nothing would change. While on holiday, Danny received a phone call from one of his colleagues. The new owners were letting staff go and emptying the offices. On Danny’s return he was told to report to Manchester. He was threatened with legal action and dismissal if he did not comply or if he approached any of the former business clients.
Danny is a proud, honest person with a competitive nature. He refused to be bullied. After discussing the situation with his wife and gaining her support, he decided to go it alone. Danny shared some of the details and challenges he has had to endure. He has told his story and I have seen first hand that business people will follow and support Danny because the business is Danny.
I couldn’t stop myself thinking that this is a great example of how building and maintaining Honesty and Trust helps build a truly sustainable business. Danny tells every one of his customers, ‘If you’re not happy with my service, don’t pay me.’ Danny has no debtors.
